Mark and Nicky's story
About 10 years ago, Nicky and I used this technique before we ran our first-ever NLP training event. For us that was picturing the scene 20 minutes after the eight-day event was over.
The whole thing having worked out exactly as we wanted it. We imagined saying to each other, âWhat a fantastic group of people. That went really wellâ. This gave us a great feeling inside.
Day one, we turned up at the hotel to get ready to deliver this training. As we were getting set up, I turned on the projector and the bulb went âblinkâ and went out. I thought, âOkay, fineâ. I went to reception and told them what had happened. They said they'd call maintenance.
After a couple of hours, no one had come to fix the projector, so I went back to reception to ask what was going on. They said, âOh yeah, sorry, I spoke to maintenance and it's going to be three days before we can get a new bulbâ.
At this point I could have had a meltdown and start worrying about everything else that could go wrong. But because I'd trained my mind, I knew it would be okay and we took it in our stride.
Nicky and I had friends who were telling us to complain and ask for some money back from the hotel because this problem could have ruined our training, but what good would it have done us to complain? What would our state of mind have been like? How would it have affected rapport with the hotel?
It would have wrecked our thinking for the whole training if we'd approached the situation like that, if we'd listened to what our friends were telling us. Instead, we just found a way that everyone could see the computer screen and the PowerPoint slides, and we got on with it.
Having this positive focus helped us to see other opportunities, rather than getting caught up in emotions and falling into a downward spiral that gets out of control.
